Ever wanted to get into Minecraft, and be one of those 'hip' indie-game playing kids?
Okay, I'm officially weird. But today I will like to present you with a Minecraft guide that should get you started!
Please keep in mind, this guide is still in progress and will be updated regularly.

SECTION 1 - THE FIRST DAY

Okay, you just figured out the main menu and you are now in the game! Here are the controls, first off:

W - Forward
A - Left
S - Back
D - Right
SPACE - Jump
E - Inventory
Left Click Hold - Break Block,
Left Click - Use tool, sword, etc.
Right Click - Place block
ESC - Pause

I know, it's a lot to swallow, but we'll get into it. First off, you should (hopefully) be in an area with trees. There's currently these types of trees: Oak, Old Oak, Birch, Jungle, Arcacia, and Spruce. The color of the wood will indicate

A. What biome you are in
B. What wood type it is

http://www.minecraft101.net/r/i/wood-colours_thb.jpg

Just walk up to the tree, and begin breaking the tree blocks by aiming your cursor at it, and holding left click. You should see the wood block in your hotbar. You can use your scroll wheel or number keys to navigate the hot bar.

http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/TihDnikVGb8/hqdefault.jpg

Okay, now we're getting into things. Press the 'E' key to open your inventory. You should see your player, your inventory, and your hotbar slots. Right click on the wood to split it. Now, do you see the top right, the four squares? Click again to drop the wood right in there.

You should see some lighter wood where the arrow is pointing. Click it to pick it up. You just crafted your first item! (*The planks might be a different color, depending on what wood you are using)

http://www.minecraft-craftingguide.com/images/Crafting-Planks1.png

Now, take the planks you just crafted, and put two of them on top of each other in the crafting menu, like so:

http://www.minecraft-craftingguide.com/images/Crafting-sticks.png

And you get sticks! Next, put four planks together to make a Crafting Table! The crafting table gives you a larger grid, as seen in the pictures above. Put it in your hotbar and then place it on the ground, and press right click to use it:

http://gametipcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/craftingtable.png

You might want to break another tree or two, and then use your shiny new Crafting Table, by right clicking. Now, place the sticks and planks in this order to make a pickax:

(The flashing colors are the different materials you can make a pickax out of, for now just line the top row with your planks)

http://www.minecraft-craftingguide.com/images/Crafting-pickaxes1.gif

And you should have a basic pickax for mining. Next, you will want to make a sword:

http://www.minecraft-craftingguide.com/images/Crafting-swords.gif

Now, you're ready. It's time to make a shelter. Break your Crafting Table so that you can carry it with you.
Try and find a hill-area or cliff. Begin digging a two-block high entrance, and branch out a bit, making a square shaped room. Use your pickax to break any stone you will encounter.

Once you get 8 pieces of stone, you can craft a furnace. Place your Crafting Table in a convenient place and then use this recipe to make a furnace:

http://wikicheats.gametrailers.com/images/3/3b/Minecraft_furnace_crafting.jpg

Now go outside and break another tree. Be mindful not to use your pickax to cut it down, because that's just a waste. Now, make half of the wood into planks. You can split items in your inventory by mousing over it and using right click. Make half into planks and keep the other half as normal wood.

Go back inside, place your furnace, and then right click on it. Pick up a piece of wood, and put it in the top half of the furnace, place another piece of wood in the bottom.

http://gametipcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/makingcharcoal.png

Be patient as it cooks, and you should get charcoal:

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/4/4f/Charcoal.png

Now, go back to your inventory or Crafting Table, and place the charcoal and a stick like so:

http://gametipcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/torch.png

And you should get four torches! Torches are very important as they provide light and keep monsters from spawning in your house. If you haven't already, expand your small cave room a bit so that you have some space. Place your Crafting Table and your new Furnace in an empty spot where it won't get in the way. Place a torch to give the room some lighting.

Next, you will want to make a door to keep unwanted guests out of your newfound abode:

http://gametipcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/doorwooden.png

You can place the door like any other block. Place it in your two block high entrance. You can right click to open or close it any time you want.

Now, you have a basic hill house that you can enter or exit! You will want to head outside and start killing animals while it is still daytime.
Animals can include Cows, Sheep, or Pigs, or other. They will usually drop food like Porkchops or Beef, but Sheeps drop Wool, which comes in handy later. Try and kill animals around your house but be careful not to wander too far, or you could get lost.

You will want to use charcoal to cook the food in your furnace:

http://www.minecraftxl.com/images/smelting/steak.png

http://www.minecraftxl.com/images/smelting/cooked-porkchop.png

Do you notice your hunger bar? It looks like this:

http://www.laulessmc.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/hunger2.jpg

It is the drumsticks on the right. If you have been working for a bit, you will notice the drumsticks will start to disappear. You will want to eat your food when it starts to get low. If your hunger bar is missing more than one drumstick, you can't regenerate hearts.

Now you know the basics of Crafting and Cooking.

SECTION 2 - THE FIRST NIGHT

Alright, so you've got your first house and equipment, what's next? Well, daylight doesn't last forever! Here's what you do when nightfall starts to come.
You can tell when night is coming, because the sky will become orange, and there will be less lighting. You will want to get indoors as soon as possible.

If you don't wish to fight monsters, Press ESC, go to Options, and then set your difficulty to Peaceful. Otherwise, set it to Easy. You can change it to Normal or Hard later once you get the hang of things.

You should begin hearing noises from outside, growling, snarling, hissing, or clacking of bones. These are the different mobs you are hearing:

(Clacking, bone noises) - Skeleton
Shoots arrows from long distances and can take out unsuspecting players

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/thumb/2/23/Skeleton.png/118px-Skeleton.png

(Hissing) - Creepers
Blows up if you get too close!

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/thumb/0/0a/Creeper.png/150px-Creeper.png

(Growling, groans, moaning) - Zombies
These are your typical bad guy grunts, watch out though, if they get close they'll nibble on ya!

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/thumb/c/c3/Zombie.png/150px-Zombie.png

(Strange noises, magical spurts, zapping noises) Enderman
These guys are Slender wannabes, one look at them and they will FIND YOU AND KILL YOU. I'm serious.

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/thumb/2/28/Enderman.png/106px-Enderman.png
(Sticky footsteps, different hissing, "CHKKK!") - Spider
These little buggers will hide out on your roof and wait until you walk outside to pounce.

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/thumb/8/84/Spider.png/150px-Spider.png

"OMG REX!" you scream. "THESE GUYS BE SCARY, HOW DO I FIGHT THEM!?"
Well, fine sir/madam, I will tell you!
First of all, open your door and stand in the doorway. Wait until a mob comes, and then whack away with left click. You can also do a critical strike by jumping and left clicking on them. A critical strike makes white stars around the mob for a split second.

Killing mobs becomes essential later in the game, but STAY AWAY FROM CREEPERS! IF YOU SEE ONE, RUN BACK INTO YOUR HOUSE. People are so stupid, thinking they can take on these things. DO NOT ATTEMPT THEM. If you even get close they will explode, killing you, and most likely take out half of your house. Not the most friendly critters.

Now that you've had some practice, go back inside and wait the night out. If you died, just respawn, find your items, and get the heck back to your house. If you stay inside, the mobs can't see you through your door and you will be fine.

Also, if you see a zombie banging on your door, don't freak out, they burn in sunlight!

SECTION 3 - MORE BASICS - FARMING, BEDS, AND ARMOR, OH MY!

Although it might seem like forever, day will come again. Head outside, but be wary of creepers and spiders. Creepers and Spiders don't burn in sunlight like Skeletons or Zombies do, but they'll go away if you don't bother them. Spiders however, might drop on you as soon as you exit your house.

Start cutting grass, you can do this with bare hands as you can just cut it with one left click. As you start cutting grass around the area, you will get seeds! Now, seeds are important because they can provide you with a food source, Wheat.

Craft a Hoe using this recipe:

http://www.epicminecraft.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/how-to-create-a-hoe-in-minecraft.png

(Note: You can also start using Stone to make tools instead of Wood if you have extra!)

Now you have a hoe! Find a spot outside or get lots of dirt. Use the hoe outside by right clicking to create farmland, now you can plant the seeds on the farmland. If you prefer to farm indoors, you can mine out a farming room in your cave house. Then, create a big hole 1 block deep, and put dirt in it.

Then you can Hoe the dirt and place seeds in it like usual, just make sure you have LOTS of torches nearby to provide light! I prefer indoor farming over outdoor, because with outdoor farming, your crops can get trampled by friendly and hostile mobs. Keep in mind, Wheat is the only crop that will grow without water. However, if you have a water source nearby, you can dig a trench around your farm and the water will flow around it.

Crops with water grow significantly faster than crops without it. Your wheat should go through several stages. It is fully grown when it is tall and dark-brownish, and it can be harvested by simply left clicking on the crop itself.

Now you should get the Wheat item, three Wheat makes bread:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eMHwF-1ifYs/UEUJsePKP7I/AAAAAAAAAfs/Zf34QQbZKXw/s1600/crafting+wheat+minecraft.PNG

Bread heals less drumsticks than beef or porkchops, but it's still an easy go-to food source if there aren't any animals nearby. Next, you will want to make a bed. With beds, you can skip night time entirely and set your spawn point, so if you die you are right back in your house.

You will want to kill sheep and get three pieces of Wool. Be mindful about walking too far away from your house, you probably can't find it again. Once you have three pieces of Wool, you can put it together with planks to make a bed:

http://gametipcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/bed.png

You might get different colored Wool from sheeps, but that's okay. It still works. You can also get string from Spiders that you can make into Wool, like this:

http://www.minecraft-crafting-guide.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/wool.jpg

Once you have your bed, place it in an empty space in your house. The bed requires two blocks of room in order to be placed. You might also want to make your ceiling higher so that it is 3 blocks. Otherwise you can't sleep in the bed.

Now, I'll teach you how to make Armor. Basic Armor involves Leather, which you can find from cows. Cows have a bigger chance of dropping Raw Beef than Leather, so you might have to kill A LOT to get a full set of armor.

Once you have enough though, you can use these recipes to craft your very first set of armor:

http://i.imgur.com/VqrVG.png

You can equip these armor pieces by opening your inventory. You can place the armor in the four open Armor Slots in the top left of the window.
And those are the basics of Farming, Armor, and Beds!

SECTION 4 - MINING TIME!

You think you're ready for mining? Well, okay then! You can start off by simply digging a passage into the ground, make the mine stair-like so that you can get out and aren't stuck down there. I'm not really going to tell you how to make your mine, because there's many different ways to do it! Just bring lots of torches, a stone pickax, and a sword!

Don't dig straight down, because you can't get out, and you don't know what's below you!

Here's some mining ideas, if you really don't know what to do: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tutorials/Mining_techniques

First off, the first ore you will probably find is Coal:

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/4/40/Coal_%28Ore%29.png

The coal you've been using is Charcoal, not true Coal, but works the same way. True Coal is easy to mine and doesn't take up lots of your wood resources. Coal usually comes in big batches and is distinguished by it's black spots.

If you keep mining and digging, you will also find Iron. Iron is more rare than Coal, but is very valuable and necessary for game progression.

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/a/a8/Iron_%28Ore%29.png

Iron ore usually comes in small batches and is distinguished by it's dull-brown or tan spots. A stone pickax is required in order to break these things, otherwise you won't be getting anywhere!

After you've run out of torches, pickax breaks, or you're satisfied with what you've got, go back to the surface. Depending on where you built your mine, you have to be careful because it might be night time when you get out.

Now you will learn the art of smelting!

Iron and Gold ores require smelting, which can be done using the furnace. Place the ore in the top square just like you did with the raw meat or porkchops, and then place a piece of Charcoal or Coal in the bottom like usual. You will get Iron/Gold ingots as a result! Although you most likely haven't found gold yet.

http://oyster.ignimgs.com/widgets/portals/minecraft/images/265.png

These ingots work just like the Wood Planks or Stone blocks. You now have access to Iron tools, Iron armor, and buckets. Here are some of the things you can make with Iron:

http://www.minecraft-craftingguide.com/images/Crafting-bucket.png

(Buckets can be used to carry liquids such as Water or Lava. You can right click to pick up Water/Lava or Right Click on a cow to milk it. Milk gets rid of all status effects)

http://wikicheats.gametrailers.com/images/7/72/Minecraft_Shears_Crafting.jpg

(These are Shears. Shears are used to cut the wool off of Sheep without killing them, allowing for Sheep farms among other things)

http://m.minecraft-craftingguide.com/images/Crafting/Crafting-cauldron.png

(This is a Cauldron. I recommend you don't make one right now, as they are only useful later for potion brewing)

In addition to these, there are lots more recipes you can make with Iron! Just experiment! You can make Iron Armor, Tools, Doors (opens with Redstone), and many others.

By now, your inventory is probably getting very full. You want a place to store your swag, eh? Well, just make a chest:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JJVVBH5YJW8/UCPvOw144yI/AAAAAAAAAbg/qBgrQPxK7Jg/s1600/Chest+minecraft+crafting.JPG

Harvest your crops if they're grown, make proper Iron tools if needed, go mining some more. Now that you know the rules of the game, I'll teach you some more things I think you'll need!

SECTION 5 - VALUABLE ORES

Aside from Coal and Iron, there are several other ores you can collect!

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/3/39/Gold_%28Ore%29.png
Gold - Even RARER than Iron, usually in minimal bunches, requires Iron pickax to mine. Usually considered a crappy ore and is not required.

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/9/9d/Diamond_%28Ore%29.png
Diamond - Found very deep in the world, requires Iron or Gold pickax. Strongest ore in the game for tools and armor.

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/3/3d/Emerald_Ore2.png
Emerald - Appearance differs very much from other ores. Extremely rare, requires Iron, Gold, or Diamond pickax. Used to trade with villagers.

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/c/cf/Lapis_Lazuli_%28Ore%29.png
Lapis Lazuli - Requires at least Stone pickax, used to make Blue dye.

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/9/9f/Redstone_%28Ore%29.png
Redstone - Requires at least Iron pickax, useful for circuitry or various other needs, also an optional brewing ingredient.

SECTION 6 - EXPLORING THE OUTSIDE WORLD

Once you have decent armor such as Iron or better, you can explore the world. There are several items that can be crucial to navigation. First, make a compass. The compass always points toward your spawn point, so with a bit of backtracking you could easily find your way home.

http://wikicheats.gametrailers.com/images/e/e8/Minecraft_Compass_Crafting_2.jpg

Finally, you can begin with your navigation system. If you mine a lot, you should have lots of cobblestone. Make sure you have lots of torches, too. Take the cobblestone and begin making a three-block wide road. Make it go as far as you want, this can usually take awhile.

The road will allow you to travel long distances from your home without getting lost. Make sure you place torches by the road every 5-12 blocks so that the road is lit and mobs won't spawn by it.

If you dig deep enough in your mine, you can come across cave systems. Cave systems are usually jampacked with ores and mobs and are very large.

One place you might encounter is an abandoned mineshaft:

http://cdn2.planetminecraft.com/files/resource_media/screenshot/1232/abandoned-mineshaft_3163183.jpg

Follow abandoned mineshaft tracks, they will sometimes lead to chest minecarts full of treasure. You will also most likely find a dungeon with a spawner:

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/thumb/3/3c/NewDungeon1.9.png/400px-NewDungeon1.9.png

Dungeon spawners usually include Cave Spider spawners. All you need to do is kill off all the spiders and then just place a torch on top of the spawner. The mobs will not spawn with the torch on top. You are free to take the treasure from the chests.

Here are some of the mobs you might find underground:

(Hissing, regular spider sounds) - Cave Spider
These guys can be hard to distinguish from regular spiders. In light, they are blue. They have a chance to poison you.
http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/thumb/9/9f/Blue_Spider_2.png/150px-Blue_Spider_2.png

(Plopping, slapping, wet sounds) - Slime
Slimes vary in size, small Slimes are harmless, BIG Slimes do damage and split into smaller Slimes.

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/thumb/3/38/Slime.png/150px-Slime.png

There are also Strongholds, underground bases that are filled with treasure, and the elusive End Portal! I'll get into this in another section.

SECTION 7 - ANIMAL MECHANICS, BREEDING, DYEING, BASIC REDSTONE

This is where we get into the more technical side of Minecraft. Once you kill animals, they won't regenerate for a long period of time. There are usually 7-8 animals per chunk. They can move into other chunks or be killed by the player.

Then, breeding comes in!

Breeding is when you get two animals together and give them a certain item. They will fall crazy in love and then you have a third animal, the third animal will then grow up and can be mated with another animal (even the parents if you're that screwed up).

To achieve breeding, you will want to capture animals. You can build a fence around a herd of sheep, or cows, and chickens can be lured in by using seeds.
(If you made shears, you can also use this to capture sheep and take their wool, sheep wool grows back when they eat grass).

Then, you will need two of your preferred animal, and these items:

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/e/e2/Wheat.png- Sheep, Cows, and the mysterious Mooshroom

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/d/dd/Melonseeds.png- Chickens. (*Any seed can be used to breed them)
http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/0/0c/RawBeef.png-Wolves (*Tame Wolves only, we'll get into this in another section)

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/f/fb/Fish.png-Cats (*Tame Cats only, I'll get into this in another section)
http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/7/72/Golden_Carrot.png -Gold Carrots - Horses (*Tame Horses only, I'll get into this in another section)

Right click on both of the animals and they should both begin breeding. (Don't worry, all they do is rub their noses together, nothing suggestive) and then with a little 'poof' you will have a baby animal. Happy breeding!

You can also dye sheep using dyes. Just right click on a sheep using a dye, this will permanently change their wool color, and whenever you shear it off, it will grow back the same color. This is useful for colored wool farms.

If you have Leather Armor, you can also dye it, too. Just use this recipe:

http://i931.photobucket.com/albums/ad160/daftwizard/2012-09-20_204059_zpsfa8e6d0b.png

Just place a Dye with a Leather Armor piece in it, to get Dyed leather armor. This is mostly just useful for beginners, because you can't really dye Iron, Gold, or Diamond armor.

And finally, Redstone. Redstone is Minecraft's equivalent of electricity. Redstone circuits can be simple as turning on a light, or as complicated as making an entire machine or a secret door made of Pistons!

I'll be able to show you the basics of Redstone today, but I'll leave you to experiment. First, you can get Redstone by breaking Redstone ore. This will present you with a placeable item that looks like red dust when you put it down.

http://minecraft-wiki.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Redstonewireactive.png
This is a Redstone 'wire'. People call it a 'wire' because when Redstone is lit up, it activates machinery or objects.
First, you will want to make a Redstone torch, it's a very simple recipe, almost like making a real torch:

http://wikicheats.gametrailers.com/images/9/90/Minecraft_Redstone_Torch_crafting.jpg

Then, you will want a lever, which can open Iron Doors or turn on Redstone circuits:

http://wikicheats.gametrailers.com/images/0/0c/Minecraft_Lever_crafting.jpg

(You can now put an Iron Door on your house if you want to, just make sure you have a lever on each side of the wall to get it open!)

Now, place down your Lever down on the ground. Then, put down Redstone dust in a straight line right next to the Lever. When you're ready, hit the switch! You will notice that the Redstone lit up. Good, you've made your first basic Redstone structure.

(TBC, WIP, STILL GOING!)
