They might as well, SEGA is running out of money for Sonic, the franchise is dying, what better way to end it in a big bang to hand over a franchise with potential to a company thats known for nostalgia and can make a profit out of anything ( Even ports of a simple Mario game ).
Sonic died in 2003, SEGA is just kicking a dead horse around and acting as if it's something new and fresh.
